Accessorising a kitchen, Scandinavian style.

As hubby beavers away fitting the new kitchen cabinets, I’ve been busy looking for accessories. He thinks his work is more important, but IMO I think how  you style your kitchen is just as important!

Our new kitchen is going to comprise of gloss white units and gloss white worktops, giving a crisp neutral palette. The wood floor will add some warmth but we still need to inject some personality into the space. This is the virtual image the kitchen design company gave us, so you can see we really do have a blank canvas.

As the look I’m hoping to achieve is light, minimalistic, Scandi (see how I found my style here) I want to include lots of natural elements and accessorise sparingly. I’m not even having a kettle – we have invested in a boiling water tap. One compromise I have had to make is a toaster. I would like to keep it out of sight but hubby thinks that wouldn’t be practical and we would end up with a trail of crumbs everywhere! As we have to have one on display, I have chosen this rather beautiful one from Morphy Richards.

To complement this, I will add other wooden accessories. One look that seems to be very popular is a display of wooden chopping boards, which are not only useful, but look good as well.

Another functional idea is to have on hand all your kitchen essentials, but displayed either on a tray or in a lovely wooden or wicker shallow box.

We will now have the luxury of having a kitchen big enough to fit a table and chairs, and keeping with the white and wood theme, I have chosen these from Maisons du Monde

In most Scandinavian kitchens you will find open shelves, displaying beautiful crockery. This is one way to keep a feeling of calm, at the same time as adding interest to the room.

This is a gorgeous collection, but my accent colour would have to be pink! Hubby has custom fit a kitchen unit into a little corner which is just crying out for these open shelves above it. Please excuse the worktop – its temporary while we wait for our quartz ones to be fitted.

To give an even earthier feel and also add a pop of colour, a couple of potted plants strategically placed are ideal.
